I am a high school student who has always cared deeply about animals and the environment. Ever since I was little, I have worried about how the things we do can affect animals and our planet. I remember not letting my mom throw plastic in the trash because I was scared that somehow an animal might get caught in it or suffocate.
As I got older, I started learning more about climate change, pollution, and other environmental problems. I realized that a lot of the habits we have as adults start when we are young. I began to wonder why we don't teach kids more about taking care of the Earth from an early age.
That is what inspired me to create Learn for the Earth. I wanted to make environmental education interesting and easy to understand for elementary school students. My goal is to help kids learn about climate change, animals, sustainability, and the small things they can do in their everyday lives to help our planet.
I hope that by learning about these issues early, kids will grow up caring about the Earth and wanting to protect it.
I had the opportunity to teach the curriculum at Greenburgh Nature Center and Teatown Summer Camp. Actually teaching the lessons helped me see what worked and what didn't. I could tell when the kids were really interested in a topic, when an activity kept them engaged, and when something needed to be explained differently. I used what I learned from each session to adjust the lessons and activities. The curriculum became something that wasn't just created for kids, but was shaped by teaching and learning from them.
I hope to continue improving the lessons as I learn from more students and teachers, and make the curriculum available to schools and communities beyond my own.
